Rapper Tory Lanez was taken to the hospital after being attacked by another inmate in a California prison on Monday. He is currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the feet in 2020.
According to prison officials, the attack happened around 7:20 a.m. inside a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, which is about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. They did not say exactly how he was attacked, but TMZ reported that he was stabbed.
Prison staff gave him medical help right away and called 911. He was taken to the hospital, but his current condition is unknown.
The incident is now being investigated by both the prison and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.
Background on Tory Lanez’s Conviction
Tory Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson) was convicted in December 2022 of:
-
Assault with a semiautomatic firearm
-
Having a loaded, unregistered gun in a vehicle
-
Firing a gun with gross negligence
Megan Thee Stallion (real name Megan Pete) testified in court that Lanez shot at her feet while yelling at her to “dance” as she walked away from a car after a party at Kylie Jenner’s house in July 2020.
Lanez’s lawyers tried to get him a new trial, but a judge denied the request. They are now appealing the conviction. The lawyers did not comment after the prison attack.
Accusations of Harassment
Megan has also claimed that Lanez was harassing her from prison through others. Because of this, a judge issued a protective order in January 2025 that bans Lanez from contacting her or having anyone harass her on his behalf until 2030.
Lanez, 32, was “attacked by another inmate” around 7:20 a.m. May 12, a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed to USA TODAY. Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, is serving a 10-year prison sentence at the California Correctional Institution at Tehachapi after he was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
“Staff immediately responded, activated 911 and began medical aid,” according to the statement. “Peterson was subsequently transported to an outside medical facility for further treatment.”
It is currently unclear what motivated the attack.
