Japan has been ranked sixth on TasteAtlas’s list of the world’s 100 best cuisines this year, up three places from last year and the highest among Asian countries.

Chinese cuisine was the second best in the region at 8th on the global ranking, followed by Indonesian cuisine (10th).

Singapore and Laos stood near bottom of the ranking, which was based on 590,228 valid ratings for 18,912 foods in TasteAtlas’s database.

The international food magazine recommends diners to try some iconic dishes in Japan such as Wagyu, Akami Tuna, Hamamatsu gyoza (dumplings), Negitorodon (tradition rice dish) and Otoro nigiri sushi.

Some must-try restaurants include Nihombashi Kakigaracho Sugita, Nishiazabu Taku, Sushi Miyakawa, Nihonryōri Seizan and Juugo.

Founded in 2015, TasteAtlas links 9,000 local restaurants and showcases tens of thousands of dishes based on reviews and research by culinary experts, chefs, and users.

The site serves as a global map of traditional dishes made from local ingredients and aims to celebrate great food, foster pride in culinary traditions, and spark curiosity about dishes unfamiliar to many tourists.
