DENVER (KDVR) — A 17-year-old was caught traveling 56 miles per hour over the speed limit in Parker, according to a social media post from the Parker Police Department.

Officers pulled the teenager over after they were clocked going 91 mph in a 35 mph zone.

In the social media post, the department said that had the driver not been a teenager, they would have been taken to jail.

They will not go unpunished, however, with the department stating that the teen will lose their driver’s license and their insurance rates will skyrocket if they do eventually get a license back.

The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles’ website said that a driver can lose their license by accumulating six points in six months, or seven points before turning 18. The driver must serve a suspension period, pay a $95 fee and might be asked to complete a defensive driving course or provide proof of insurance.

If the suspension lasts longer than a year, the driver might have to retake the written and driving tests required when first obtaining a license.

For drivers 18 and older who are caught traveling at least 40mph over the posted speed limit, they will be charged with a Class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense, face up to 90 days in jail, face a fine of $150 to $300 and accumulate 12 points on their license, which is nearly double what would result in a suspension for a 17-year-old caught going more than 40mph over the speed limit.

Suspensions for 12 points start at six months and can extend to two years in certain cases, with the exact length being determined by a DMV hearing officer.
